Mayers Appointment Puts Software Engineering In The Top Slot
Recently Marissa Mayer was appointed as the CEO of Yahoo
. A former Googler, who was companys first female engineer, she grew with the company and held several roles as an engineer, designer, product manager, and executive. She held key roles in Google Search, Google Images, Google News, Google Maps, Google Books, Google Product Search, Google Toolbar, iGoogle and Gmail.
The selection of Mayer to the top post sent shock waves through the Silicon Valley mainly because of two reasons. The first reason was that she holds a degree in computer science and the second one was that she is a woman. In todays age, where gender bias is rampant, to have a woman holding the top position of a Fortune 500 company is definitely incredible.
Catalyst, a non-profit organization recently conducted a research on the significant gains made by women in the corporate sector and the results were definitely along the expected lines. According to them, there is not much difference between todays women and the women six years back-they are still the neglected lot. The following are some of the research findings.
* Women constitute nearly half the total workforce; earn 57 percent of Bachelors degrees, 60 percent of Masters degrees, and over half of PhDs.
* Women control or influence 73 percent of consumer decisions in the United States.
* Yet women hold just 3.2 percent of CEO positions and roughly 16 percent of board seats at Fortune 500 companies.
* In 2010, women held only 7.6 percent of top earning positions in the Fortune 500.
* In addition, women suffer a pay gap that begins with their very first joband increases over time.
In such a scenario, Mayers appointment as the Yahoo CEO would attract more girls to take up
careers in computer technology. This has been vouched by the respondents to a recent survey by IEEE and
IEEE Computer Society to assess how IEEE can better serve women in engineering. In the survey, the majority of the respondents pointed out that ease of access to computers and technical career information in grade school and exposure to female role models would likely attract more women to technical fields.
Though very few women have made up to such high profile position, seeing someone of the same gender in a high position would convince those planning
software engineering that success in the technical fields is definitely possible.
