Mayflies - The Most Exciting of Flies?

The naiads subsist primarily in streams underneath rocks, putrefying plant life, or contained in the sediment. And at its ultimate moult that it becomes a sub imago or dun. Apparently the word dun means dull brown and this word very much describes the look of a mayfly sub imago. It might resemble the shape of its adult form, but as a sub imago is really dull in colour, a inadequate flyer and sexually immature. It would be the lack of color and patterns which means it's not attractive to mates. The sub imago stage is brief and never longer than 24 hours. However maybe drastically shorter in a quantity of species.

When it becomes an adult, its single purpose in living is to produce offspring. This striking living thing may be alive barely for a few hours, certainly no more than twenty four hrs. Therefore once they have mated, the female lays her eggs and dies becoming what is known as spent. The whole rotation then begins over again.

It is rather remarkable to note that the short lifetime of the mayfly is represented in it's name in different languages around the world and interprets literally as one-day-fly! It often comes about that each one of the mayflies inside a population mature at once (the hatch), and for a day or two at spring or autumn, mayflies can be everywhere, dancing around one another in huge groups, or resting on all accessible surface and that is a view to watch plus one which anglers all over look forward to.
