Mazda MPV Engine: Hauling Families Since 1989

This Multi Purpose Vehicle from Mazda was launched in 1989 as rear wheel drive minivan. Up till now 3 generations of Mazda MPV have come into market. Mazda has shifted from rear to front wheel drive option in its 2nd and latest, 3rd, generation MPV. Major reason for this shift is improving driving experience and stability of vehicle as it is targeted towards families. However, from the very start Mazda included an option for a 4WD MPV as well, but it was always an optional feature and was never given the status of standard.

Mazda produced different variant of APV specifically for US, Europe and Japanese markets customized according to safety and environmental regulations of the targeted area. Because of fine tuning its offering according to target market, Mazda MPV is among the most successful minivans and over one million units have been produced since 1989.

Despite being a commercial success Mazda faced stiff competition in US from Ford Windstar, launched in 1995, however Mazda emerged victorious. First generation (1989-1998) MPVs had option of choosing between 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual transmission only. They were launched with 2.6, 2.5 and 3.0 litre engines in 3 door and 4 door body trims.

Second generation (1999-2006) was offered with only 5 speed auto transmission and in just 4 door body trim. However, engine capacity was made more dynamic and many new engine codes were added. Third generation (2006 till now) Mazda MPV has available choices of 4,5 and 6 speed auto transmission but like its predecessor it is launched only in 4 door trim. Also only two variants of 2.3 litre engine are available in current generation.
