According to Vishnu Purana, it was King Madhava Varma who built the kingdom of Vijayawada. He also constructed the temple of Kanaka Durga on Indrakiladri Hills.
Two major attractions in Vijayawada are Kanaka Durga (Goddess of Power) and Mangalagiri temples. Inscriptions of different dynasties are found in the Kanaka Durga Temple. Lord Narasimha is the deity in the Mangalagiri Temple which is situated on a hillock. Hazrat Bal Mosque is a religious centre for the Muslims. A holy relic of Prophet Mohammad is kept here and displayed once a year.
Mogalarajapuram and Undavalli caves are hot destinations for tourists in Vijayawada. These caves were believed to have been carved out in 5th and 7th centuries respectively. A huge monolith of Lord Buddha in reclining posture is a magnificent sight here.
Bhavani Island, located on Krishna River, is one of the largest islands on a river in India. Rajiv Gandhi Park is a picnic spot. There is a collection of sculptures, paintings, idols, weapons, cutlery and inscriptions in Victoria Museum. The best time to visit Vijayawada is from October to March.
