Measuring For Your Hot Tub Cover
Many hot tub cover outlets will custom manufacture a hot tub cover to fit your hot tub"s measurements
. Measurements for your hot tub cover should be as precise as possible. While a perfectly fitted hot tub cover is virtually airtight, a hot tub cover that is out by even half an inch will often let steam escape. This makes it more difficult to heat up your hot tub and can dramatically decrease your hot tub"s energy efficiency. A recent study by the University of California listed well-fitted hot tub covers as the number one way to improve hot tub energy efficiency.
Hot tubs come in different shapes, and each shape requires different measurement techniques. For a hot tub that is a square or rectangle with 90 degree corners, measurement is easy. Hook the end of a measuring tape on one of the corners and pull it out to the other corner. Make sure it"s taught and that both ends are right at the edge on the hot tub. Then, record the measurement. Most hot tubs are manufactured to measure in whole inches. However, if your measurement is between whole inches, make sure to write down your exact measurement, to an eighth of an inch if necessary. Measure again if you feel it is necessary, but always trust your precision measurements over round numbers of manufacturer specifications. Industrial measuring errors are more common than many people realize, and hot tubs can sometimes change their dimensions gradually over time as the materials warp and widen. After you have measured one side, measure a perpendicular side. Never trust that your hot tub is a perfect square, even if it appears to be. These two measurements are all you need.
If your hot tub has any other shape, it becomes more complicated. If your hot tub has rounded corners, a hot tub cover manufacturer will need three measurements: the total length of your hot tub, the total width of your hot tub, and the radius of your corner curvature. The first two are easy to get. They are just like measuring for a hot tub with squared corners, except instead of measuring at the edge, measure from the exact middle of one side to the exact middle of the other. Measuring the radius of the curved corners is harder and has to be done indirectly. Have an assistant hold the measuring tape exactly where the curvature begins on one corner, then pull it out to exactly where the curvature begins at the next corner. Subtract this measurement from the total length measurement of the hot tub. Then divide the resulting measurement by two. That"s your radius of curvature.
Your hot tub may also have one or two corners to away to make it a little bit smaller. In this case, a hot tub cover manufacturer will need additional measurements: total length and width not including the cut corner, the length of the fifth or sixth sides, and the radii of any curved corners.
It can be a pain for some hot tubs, but accurate measurement now will save you a lot of energy bills in the long run.
