Mechanical Boilers A Brief Overview
In this modern age of machines we are surrounded by machines almost everywhere
. In fact there is a multitude of machines which are bought into daily usage. Amongst these, boilers hold an important place. Let's have a brief discuss on what actually a boiler is, by analyzing it a bit.
So how can we define a boiler? Simply speaking, a boiler can be mentioned as a closed vessel, in which water or fluid is heated. The
pressure vessel in a boiler is usually made of steel. However, in the earlier days, it was made of wrought iron. Boilers bearing a live steam model are often made of copper or brass. This is mainly done since it's more easily fabricated in smaller size boilers.
The source of heat for a boiler is combustion of several fuels. These might include wood, coal, oil or natural gas. Electric steam boilers mainly use resistance or immersion type heating elements. Again, nuclear fission is also used as a heat generating steam. Heat recovery steam generators put into use the heat rejected from other processes such as gas turbines.
Boilers can be mainly be classified into the following configurations. These can be mentioned as Pot Boiler or Haycock Boiler, Fire Tube Boiler, Water Tube Boiler, Flash Boiler, Fire Tube Boiler, Sectional Boiler etc.
Boilers which can be seen around us mostly produce steam to be used at saturation temperature. Superheated steam boilers vaporize the water and then further heat the steam in a super heater. This provides steam at much higher temperature but can decrease the overall thermal efficiency of the steam generating plant. This happens mainly because the higher steam temperature requires a higher flue gas exhaust.
Supercritical steam generators are frequently used for the production of electric power. They generally operate at supercritical pressure. There is no generation of steam bubbles within the water, because the pressure is above the critical pressure at which steam bubbles can form. It generally passes below the critical point as it does work in a high pressure turbine and enters generator's condenser.
Boilers, as it has been discussed, are usually a closed vessel, where some kind of pressure is created which in turn generates power. The design and construction of boilers might be quite complicated depending upon the work or function it's going to carry out, either in a small or large scale.
In fine, it can be said that boilers, existing as an essential element of modern machinery, plays an important role in generating power. Though its design is quite complicated and requires much care and attention for operation, yet its one of the important source of generating electricity and power, all around.
