Medical Application Solutions For Skin Resurfacing

Medical application solutions are often conceptualized from a growing need in the medical industry

. Laser skin resurfacing procedures have experienced sustained growth and are one of the most common applications of medical lasers. In order to address a growing demand, new systems have been developed to provide precision in a hand held system.

The Challenge

Prior systems were designed to transmit laser energy from a generation unit through an articulated arm and on to the surface of the patient's skin. However, the arms can suffer from vibrations that would make high precision beams difficult to manage. In addition, newly developed generation mediums create a different type of beam that cannot be transmitted through the optical fibers used in the articulated arms.

The solution was to integrate the entire generation and delivery system into a hand held unit. The transmission and vibration problems would be eliminated by integrating the generation and delivery section of the resurfacing device. As a result of this integration, the design posed a challenge of fitting a two dimension laser scanner and all the associated equipment into a light weight, ergonomically balanced hand held unit.

The Solution: DC Micromotors

The use of DC micromotors enabled the creation of a hand held skin resurfacing laser that weighs only one and a half pounds and includes a fully functional two dimensional scanner for laser application. The stepper scanner was made possible due to lightweight DC gearmotors that can achieve high reduction ratios.

The DC gearmotors were set with a 256:1 reduction ration in order to balance both speed and stepper resolution. The proper balance is necessary to shorten procedure times without compromising the quality of skin resurfacing. The resolution can be easily adjusted with a simple change to just the gearbox, leaving the rest of the unit intact.

A pair of stepper DC micromotors is used to run the scanner, one for each of the two dimensions. Their miniaturized and lightweight design was instrumental in creating a total system that weighed less than two pounds and fit into a hand held unit. Ultimately, the stepper DC micromotors are highly predictable, allowing even, consistent skin resurfacing results.

The device's calibration is also achieved in the same miniature hand unit. With a focus on safety being paramount, the unit is calibrated before each and every use. In order to expedite this process, a third motor is incorporated into the device. This one controls a mirror that can be placed into the laser's optical path in order to redirect the beam into a "beam dump" that allows for calibration to occur. Still, the device weighs just one and a half pounds. The dump ensures that the laser is operating at the proper energy level before it is applied to a patient's skin.

The final device is a highly effective combination of lightweight, miniaturized DC gearmotors, a stepper scanner, reflective mirrors, and generation media that enables new medical application solutions for skin resurfacing.
