Medical oncology deals with the treatment of cancer with medicines called chemotherapy in which medicines can be taken in form of tablets or as injections that should be taken intravenously.

Surgical oncology deals with treatment of cancer by surgically removing the tumor. Surgical oncology is a solution for cancers in early stage or advanced local tumors.

Radiation oncology is the treatment of cancer through radiation therapy which is administered in daily fractions for over weeks. This treatment can be used as a sole treatment or can be given in combination with chemotherapy. Radiation is at times used in treating the locally advanced cancers prior to the surgery to make the surgery possible.

Palliative medicine deals with patients who are not physically fit to go through the other treatments. In the advanced stages when cancer does not respond to radiation, chemotherapy or surgery palliative medicine is used to address the physical, emotional, spiritual and social issues that arise with advanced illness.
