Medicare - Are You Eligible?

Generally, the eligibility for Medicare is for an individual or their spouse that

has worked for a minimum of ten years in employment that is Medicare covered. You must also be age 65 or older, as well as a permanent United States resident. You may also be eligible if you are not 65 but you are disabled or have end-stage renal disease. Eng stage renal disease is permanent kidney failure that requires a transplant or dialysis. There are a few guidelines that will help you to discern if you are eligible, and what plans you are eligible for.

Eligibility for Medicare depends on age, but there are also other factors. You can be eligible to receive Part A without paying premiums if you are 65 years of age and you are eligible to receive railroad benefits or social security but you have not yet filed for them. You are also eligible if you already get retirement benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board or social security, or if you or your spouse had Medicare-covered government employment. If you are under the age of 65, you may still be eligible for part A without paying premiums if you have end stage renal disease, or you have received Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits or social security for two years.

Although you may not have to pay for a premium for part A, you must pay a premium for part B. You may find out what this monthly premium is for the current year online, under the eligibility for Medicare section. This premium is deducted from a Civil Service Retirement check, Railroad Retirement, or social security check that you receive. If you do not receive these payments, you will be billed for your part B Medicare plan premium once every three months. Please note that you are eligible for Medicare upon turning 65 even if you are not eligible for social security.

In order to check your own personal eligibility for Medicare, you may use the Medicare eligibility tool. You will be provided with information about your enrollment in Medicare as well as eligibility while using this tool. It asks you to answer a series of questions provided. The number of questions you will need to answer and the questions will be dynamic based upon your personal answers. Once the tool has collected enough information about you, it will then display information in detail that is specifically tailored to your situation.
