Michigan Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage for Medicare recipients within the state. Part D insurance plans are provided by private insurance companies. These plans are not provided by the government. A private insurance company must be approved by the government before it can provide a Medicare drug plan. Medicare plan D is available to all Medicare recipients.

Now, Michigan seniors who are enrolled in either Medicare Part A, or Part B, or both, can pursue a Part D plan.

Enrolling in a Part D plan is not mandatory. Some seniors find prescription help from their local physician, or some seniors get their Part D plan within a Medicare advantage plan (Part C). If you have prescription coverage within a Medicare advantage plan, then you cannot enroll in a stand alone Part D plan.

Within the Part D plan, Medicare regulates a standard level of coverage. But, the actual costs and coverage varies among the many drug plans out there. When asked about costs, you have to assume the monthly premium, the yearly deductible, and co-pays for each individual drugs.

Like coverage, premiums very by each insurer. For Michigan consumers interested in a Part D plan, research needs to be done to figure out what plan fits their need the best.

Typically, each prescription drug plan will have a network of pharmacies that you will be required to use. Making sure that you can use a pharmacy that is convenient for you is an important consideration when you're evaluating Medicare Part D plans.

As always, it is recommended that each consumer check their Part D plan against their current medications that they are taken. Only at that point, should a Michigan senior research what Part D plan is the best for them.
