Medicare Rolling Out Changes For Seniors

Recent health care reforms, which have been the subject of much debate

, are now being promoted with material such as "Medicare and the New Health Law" from the Area Agency on Aging. This material outlines the Affordable Care Act and how it affects seniors and their health care insurance coverage. These changes seek to give retirees adequate medical care by phasing out the gap in Part D of the Medicare prescription plan.

The gap in the plan for coverage of prescription medication requires plan holders to pay for the entire premium for Part D while having to shoulder all expenses associated with their medication. One of the initial benefits the Affordable Care Act gives retirees is a rebate of $250. Next year, seniors affected by the gap will get discounts, and only have to pay half of the costs of prescription medication. In the same year, preventative services and annual medical check-ups will also be free for retirees.

Further modifications to Medicare coverage will eventually eliminate Medicare Advantage plan overpayment and develop better incentives for more streamlined and higher-quality health care for seniors and other Medicare members, while extending the Medicare Trust Fund's solvency by an additional nine years.

Despite the release of new material to explain the changes to those who will be affected by the Affordable Care Act, many seniors are still wary of the amendments. Some are distrustful of these coming changes, stating that their monthly premiums can shoot up, or lose their rights with the government-run health care program.

Although proponents of the Affordable Care Act say that the changes will do nothing but benefit seniors by allowing them more in-depth health care coverage, presentations detailing the changes to Medicare are necessary for members to understand the reform.
