Meditation is about Being in True Character
There is a misconception that meditation is about focused thinking on a particular subject or mind based physical element. When in reality it is an experience into the conscious awareness of which you are, a Spiritual Being having a human experience. You are pure energy; however, most people use the mind in an attempt to place some definition on that which is beyond form.

When you finally recognize that meditation is beyond form, then you will begin to understand that meditation is about Being in true character, which is a Spiritual Being, period.
We are all capable of disassociating ourselves from form based objects and thought; however, few every really experience their true essence at a level of energy vibration capable of even starting to understand the eternal scope of what that really means.
Once you discovery the reality of formless, conscious awareness, it will be possible for you to take the physical body beyond thought, into the realm of non-thought and natural conscious clarity. Everyone can experience this, however, most allow the mind to cloud the clarity of this natural experience. Until you allow yourself to return to your true character, a Spiritual Being, you will only experience yourself based upon form based definitions. Therefore, you will always live life in reference to limited form based identification with other form based by-products and through the experience of life-situation illusion. You can do much better than that - if you choose to tap into your higher self awareness.
Most people live life backwards; they think - therefore they believe they arewhen in reality, you are - therefore you think. The Spiritual Being was created first, and then, stepped into the body, which was created by the formless energy. Therefore, you are housed in the body and are part of the body for only as long as you are housed within it. When your destined work is complete, you will leave the body and move on. This deep knowing is found in the meditation experience, not in the minds limited perspective of what is.
What is really exciting is the fact that you can discovery how to merge the Spiritual Being (higher self) with the body, such that, the mind becomes aligned with your original intention for being here. Once this integration is achieved, life perception changes exponentially and you open yourself to the unlimited possibilities of the Universe.
