Mediterranean architecture
Mediterranean architecture was especially popular between 1915 and 1940, and still remains one of the most popular ones there is. The Mediterranean architecture was deeply influenced by the fact that these parts include three very different continents: Europe(Spain, Greece, France, Italy and the Balkan), Asia (Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon) and Africa(Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya), and they have had a very long and prolific history with many civilizations. It was used all over the world, for designing buildings in places like California or Florida, that were inspired by the buildings in the Mediterranean, due to the fact that they have the same climate. These structures are specific for having elements like courtyards or terraces.
Mediterranean houses have some elements that raise their aesthetics. For example, they have porticos supported with Doric columns, balconies with parapet walls, and colonnades with keystones on the top. There can be chandeliers and mantelpieces inside, and gardens, with decorative landscape plants, and fountains outside. The buildings can have open porches, divine towers and tall turrets, spiral staircases and a loggia(a chain of arches supported by columns). The houses can be situated next to the ocean or built in the hills. Most of the houses have window grilles made out of wood, because they have to withstand different weather conditions like rain, sun, wind and salt from the sea.
The basic thing to know here is that the type of building structure determines the way the building is built. For example, this means that an Italianate villa will be built differently than a farmhouse, which sounds reasonable enough, but is still something worth emphasizing. The design for the buildings have many origins and can be inspired by, for instance, Spanish churches or can have its origins Moorish, Tuscan or Andalusian architecture. Many homes have gates and fences to give its residents some privacy, they have more than one floor and many bedrooms, and the entrance to the building usually has a vestibule. The roof is either made from red tiles or hipped, and they have eaves under the edge. The most used colors inside are lavender, sky blue, pale yellow, and there can be swimming pool outside.
Due to the hot climate, especially during the summer when the temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius, houses are built so that the inside remains constantly cool. This is done by constructing thick walls. They are, therefore, built taking into account different environmental(exp. sound) and weather factors, like rain, wind, and temperatures from which the people inside should be protected from. This can be done by using insulation to keep the heat from getting inside, by giving the walls a mortar finish. And to avoid further absorption, the walls and floors are usually white so that they reflect heat.
So we could say that the buildings have both an allocation and that they look good, blending functionality with elegance. They are very open and have good ventilation, with a lot of breezy areas inside keeping in mind the warm climate of the Mediterranean implemented into the architecture
