Meego Tablet Gets More Attention Than A Puppy At The Beach

Not only is it a tablet and a standard netbook

, it has all the goodies we as AppUp developers have been waiting for including accelerometers and a multi touch screen. When you stack a purpose built mobile OS like MeeGo on top you end up with a very capable platform for immersible games and reactive applications.

The first thing I noticed out of the box, was that MeeGo is more touch friendly than it's Windows counterparts in default configuration. The OS tabs and menuing were sized appropriately and responded to single taps where appropriate. This gave me the feeling that it was purpose built and ready for tablet computing. The tabbed layout lends itself to multitasking much better than one would expect, I didn't even miss my Alt or Tab keys. Let me tell you how this device amazed me during my first 3 hours of ownership last night .

Winning the popularity contest

Back to the title of this post at last. While sitting at sushi, three different wait staff inquired about the tablet. One was astonished when after recognizing it as a netbook, watched in amazement as I performed a few simple touch gestures on the device. The others, after watching a few moments commented that it sure beat the current alternative platform in a number of ways. All said and done, the tablet proved that a pairing with MeeGo gets it all the attention it needs. This is good news for AppUp developers indeed.

With the age of the ATOM powered tablet upon us, we can reach beyond the keyboard and leverage touch, gesture, and accelerometers to deliver more of what our consumers crave: Interactive Recess Computing. These additional inputs enhance mobile computing by bringing us that much closer to the elements of our games and applications. If you are not familiar with MeeGo I recommend you head over to their website to browse the feature set and download the latest OS release. If you do not have a netbook/tablet handy to install to, VMWare Player can be used for a quick and painless evaluation.

I recommend that you consider QT as a multi platform programming solution. While there are plenty of alternative solutions, QT delivers a complete package, integrates with Visual Studio and will allow you to target both Windows and MeeGo with your next title. While the AppUp SDK does not support MeeGo today, I would not be surprised if we see an announcement early next year ushering us all to bring our AppUp creations to netbooks, tablets, and in car entertainment devices running MeeGo.
