1) You need to present yourself the best that you can.

Pretty much every way of meeting someone through the internet has an option or a requirement for uploading a photo of yourself so you want to make sure that you take the time to get this right. Pick out the most flattering pictures that you have. Hey, it would not even be a bad idea to go out and get a fresh haircut before you take a photo to upload. If you can, get some female opinions on what the best picture to put up would be. It matters, so don't rush this first step.

2) You need to be able to strike up conversation online.

Just like the real world, you have to be able to carry on a conversation without it seeming too tiresome. It's still the man's job to make the first move even on the web, so you have to be able to open and then guide the conversation along. Otherwise, you will find that you don't get the warm reception that you are hoping to get.

3) Finally, you have to learn to transition things offline.

The real magic does not happen through the internet, it happens when you are able to connect offline and meet face to face. This is a transition that you need to be able to make, because if you are unable to, you are probably going to just end up with an online pen pal and nothing more.
