Melanoma Symptoms And Treatment
There is a definite relationship with skin cancer or a more serious form called malignant
melanoma to excessive sun tanning, and not using protective lotions that block harmful UV light rays from damaging your skin. This can lead to cancer of the skin especially if excessive amounts of sun tanning takes place throughout your life.
How does your body tan? This is the skins natural way of protecting itself. Before we continue, you should know that there are two main types of skin cancers: basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer.
If you were to combine all the individuals who are diagnosed with breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and even lung cancer, and compare that number to the individuals that are diagnosed with skin cancer, you would find that the skin cancer patients out number the patients of the other types of conditions. For this reason, it is important that you learn to identify the symptoms associated with skin cancer.
Many symptoms are not as easily detected as the normal ones such as odd colored lesions. You should pay attention for abnormal bad breath or bleeding in the mouth or gums as well as bad appetite and loose teeth, too much drooling or trouble swallowing. These are not signs to cancer alone, but none should be ignored at any rate. If there is a tumor, no matter the size, you should see a vet. The faster you get treatment, the better the prognosis.
Most melanomas are brown to black looking lesions with irregular border. Signs that might indicate a malignant melanoma include change in diameter, shape, color or elevation of a mole. Other signs are the appearance of a new mole during adulthood on trunk, neck or head or pain, itching, inflammation, ulceration or bleeding in existing mole.
Malignant melanoma may also spread to the liver, brain, lungs, or digestive tract. Cases of advanced ocular melanoma, or melanoma of the eye, metastasise to the liver in 95% of cases. In some cases, there are no symptoms of hepatic melanoma. Those that do experience symptoms may have nausea, weight loss, fever, jaundice, sweats or pain in the upper right area of the abdomen.
The treatment for canine melanoma is the typical cancer treatment for any type of tumor such as chemotherapy, and radiation to surgery to remove the original tumor(s). While these are expensive many pet owners feel them well worth the effort and expense in order to keep their beloved pets with them as long as possible.
Biological and radiation therapies are the last bastions of melanoma treatment. In the former, laboratory-generated cancer-combating substances called biological response, modifiers (BRMs) like tumor vaccines, interleukin-2, or interferon-alfa are administered to the melanoma patient.
Skin cancer symptoms should never be taken lightly. Non-melanoma skin cancer is very common and is highly treatable. But, it must not be ignored. Always avoid UV radiation from the sun and limit your use of sun lamps and tanning beds. Do your routine skin exams and go see your doctor if you are at all in doubt.
Palliative care can also be used to cure melanoma. This is done when there is no cure and the cancer has increased. Here all that can be done is to reduce the pain caused by cancer. The doctor normally prescribes drugs that can help to reduce the pain. This should be done for all cancer patients. Melanoma treatment is best when done early.
