Memories Of The Earth And Sea And Why Art Helps You To Enjoy Your Surroundings.

Being a country kind of man I am often drawn in the direction of breath-taking landscapes in all sorts of places

. I have one or two particular favourites and my partner already has orders (when the time arrives) to spread my charred remains in one of them. There's a golf links close to the place I reside that I frequent, as a rambler I might add not a golfer, where, after a reasonably strenuous ascent to the thirteenth tee you will be provided with a wonderful landscape of rolling hills and far away crags and, on top of everything else, a sensation of calm and well-being.

My enjoyment with lovely scenery isnt confined to the country and I can also be frequently found at the seaside where a sight can alter dramatically in just a few minutes, because of the influence of the sky colour, winds, tides and sun. Just like lots of people I decorate my home with artwork, a great deal of which was acquired whilst on my travels, which displays my liking of the sea and country. In actuality on taking a good view around my home I acknowledge that the theme of about 75% of the art is some sort of seascape.

Once in Scotland a few years ago I found a fantastic authentic modern painting that I couldnt resist purchasing despite the quite large selling price! It's not easy to describe a piece of art in words but Ill give it a try. It is one of those paintings that has unclear impressions, motion is conveyed by well-placed brush strokes and you have to apply your own interpretation into it. The picture exhibits a solitary fishing boat in a port, little movement is to be seen on the harbour wall. The shade of the sky is fairly dull and as such could depict any time of the whole day. There could be a squall getting up and the boat is taking advantage of the protection of the port to wait for the end of the bad weather and progress on its path.

It could possibly be dawn and the boat is preparing to go out to sea for a long days fishing. Similarly it might be dusk and the vessel is coming back to the harbour to unload the days bounty. No human beings might be observed either on the harbour wall or in the vessel. If there were men and women about they might perhaps give a sign as to if the vessel is on the way in or going out. There is an bright glow on the far side of the harbour wall which might be the rising or declining sun shining on some yet to be seen reflecting object on the quay; having said that it may very well be a glowing light or perhaps fire waiting to welcome the anglers home.

Personally I would prefer the situation of a homecoming ship putting in to unload the days catch. Although there are no figures obvious you could picture people standing on the wharf in readiness for the tough task facing them. As they wait around they warm themselves at a cosy fire coming from the orange glow on the wharf. The homecoming crew will before long also be relaxing their aching bodies in front of the fire before heading for their beds and the idea of a further strenuous days toil the next day. When I gaze at this painting I experience the distinct voices of the sea in my thoughts, and I attain the same kind of inner calm as if I were actually there, or even on that panoramic tee!
