Memories That Bring Joy Again And Again

It seems like all of my friends have recently had babies

. We had our most recent over a year ago, and this year it seems like everyone else is following suit. It's a lot of fun to have something like this in common with so many of the people around us, and we can rejoice together and commiserate on the ups and downs of child-bearing and child-rearing. We give each other inside information on where to shop, where to find the best deals, and on what new things we have learned from all of our efforts. For instance, I know a place where we can find top of the line brand name clothing for a dollar an item on Mondays. That's the type of information that gets eagerly passed from one new parent to the next.

Writing this has brought up a lot of emotion; memories of joy at visiting and being visited in maternity wards, of watching the eyes of my new father friends light up with real joy beyond anything we'd ever experienced. There has been so much happiness and joy these past few years, in spite of anything else that may have been difficult along the way. It's funny how gratitude makes every other negative emotion wash away, even if just for a while.

The first thing that new babies need are diapers and baby receiving blankets. When our oldest child was born, those were the first two gifts we received, and they tend to be the first gifts we give to other new parents. I kind of look at those blankets as trophies; the first awards given to the new arrivals. My wife had gotten quite good at making them, but I guarantee that new parents will love them whether they are purchased or hand made. Anything that is given from the heart to a newborn child will be received by the hearts of the parents who love them. If you want to score lifelong points with someone, do something kind for their children.

I've enjoyed watching my children grow up along side the children of my friends. I expect to see many, many more children born into our family and theirs, and I hope that these little acts of kindness and consideration go a long way to cementing our mutual friendships. Life seems like such a short time, and we need to make every moment of it as meaningful as possible.
