Men And Women Lose Weight In Different Ways
As you have probably found out by now Diets don't work
, at least not in the longer term as a weight loss method. As a nation we are not getting smaller, in fact all the indications are we are getting bigger. It has been shown that men and women tend to eat for very different reasons; they also look for very different solutions. Women are more likely to join a slimming group such as weight watchers while men are more likely to try exercise. There is also the fact that usually it is the women who do the cooking and many men don't want to upset their wife by not eating dinner in the evening so they may be tempted to skip lunch to cut down on what they eat to try to lose weight.
Unfortunately neither of these work as effective weight control measures for weight loss, and neither do calorie controlled diets or low fat diets, because all that happens is as soon as the diet is over, the weight creeps back on. Your body needs energy from food in the form of calories to operate and remain healthy and active. It adapts very quickly to the level of calories it receives, if it has an abundance of calories, it uses as many as it needs to operate your body and stores any that are left as fat in fat cells and burs some off in the form of heat and extra energy. When you put your body on a diet when you wish to lose weight, your body quickly adapts to the "famine state" by limiting the amount of calories it uses. It slows down your body functions and tells you to not move around so much by making you feel tired or depressed. So you stop moving around as much and rest and conserve energy which often slows down or stops your weight loss completely. As soon as you start to eat normally again, the first thing your body looks to do is to re-stock it's fat reserves leaving you back at square one with your weight loss! Sometimes you will begin to lose muscle rather than fat which all helps to slow down your metabolic rate, so your body is now retaining every calorie it can as you starve it, this is not a good way to lose weight. So even if you are still losing weight on your diet, you feel horrible, you can't stop thinking about food and you have to muster every ounce of determination you have to stick at your diet and lose weight.
Now muscle loss is a worry from a metabolic perspective for both men and women but also for the guys it can affect self esteem too. I don't know of any man out there who wants to be all weedy. So preserving muscle during weight loss is a must. This can be accomplished by doing weight bearing exercise to accompany the fat burning cardio exercise. Also guys, make sure that there is sufficient protein in your diet too to carry out the daily repairs in your body and accomplish muscle gain. A rule of thumb is one gram of protein per kg of lean body mass so you will need to estimate what you think that your lean body mass is. If in doubt consult a personal trainer or if you are a gym member ask to have your body fat measured there. Of course if you gain lots of muscle you may end up weighing more! Again it is worth getting your progress checked at the gym if you don't see the scales going down. Also, get someone to take photos of you before you start. You will be able to see the changes happen and that will help you stay motivated. Above all else, lose weight slowly and safely, don't try to rush it.
