Men's Incontinence – It Doesn't Mean Your Active Life Is Over

Men's Incontinence It Doesn't Mean Your Active Life Is Over

Incontinence is often considered a condition that affects women but it can affect men as well. In fact men's incontinence occurs fairly frequently in males over the age of 60. Why is it that incontinence strike men so much later in life than women? Well the answer is pretty simple.

Unlike women, particularly women who have gone through one or more pregnancies, a man' lower pelvic muscles have not gone through the same stretching and trauma that a woman experiences with childbirth. However, these muscles, like all muscles, tend to lose their elasticity and tone as we age. Consequently, when men hit that point in life where muscle tone isn't what it used to be, they can experience incontinence.

The lower pelvic muscles are important because they provide the support to the organs in the abdomen including the bladder. If this support is weakened, then the bladder becomes susceptible to outside pressures. Stress incontinence is the most common form of the condition and an involuntary passage of urine can occur from the simple act of sneezing, laughing or lifting a heavy object.

Reversing this condition is fairly simple although it requires a commitment to an exercise regimen that will take 3 months to show positive results. Women are probably already familiar with Kegel exercises because they are frequently prescribed to prepare a woman for giving birth. Basically this is an isometric exercise of the lower muscle group and involves contracting and relaxing those muscles.

The second major cause of men's incontinence is an enlarged prostate. In a man, the urethra runs from the bladder, through the prostate and into the penis. When the prostate grows, as it often does as men age, it can have a negative effect on the ability to control the flow through the urethra.

Obviously a man should check with his doctor to insure that the prostate growth is not associated with cancer. Today there is an ever increasing number of medications to reduce the size of the prostate and end men's incontinence.

The important thing for men to remember is that incontinence is not a normal part of aging. There are any number of treatments and therapies that can be used to end the condition and there is no need to change the way you live to accommodate this condition.
