Not all of our everyday products come with an instruction manual. And, cologne is one of them. When should you where it? Where do I apply it? How much should I use? What scent should I buy? All of these questions are bound to overwhelm any man.

To help simplify the cologne confusion, we have gathered a few valuable tips.

Cologne smells different on everyone. Just because your friend gets compliments on his cologne does not mean it will smell the same on you. Spray test a few brands in the store before purchasing. If ordering online, have free or discounted samples sent so you can smell the fragrance on your own skin.

A good rule of thumb for application is to apply wherever there is a heartbeat. This includes your wrists, sides of your neck, and a dab over your heart.

Remember that less is more. Keep it light when applying cologne. If you can smell it all day, so can others, which means too much was applied. You should get occasional whiffs of the fragrance, not a constant aroma.

One or two sprays or splashes will do. Hold the bottle about 6-10 inches away when applying. This will allow it to disperse over a greater area instead of centralizing and becoming overwhelming. And, if the cologne is a stronger fragrance, try the "spray in the air and walk through" method.

Moisturize skin before applying cologne. Dry skin will quickly absorb the scent and keep it from lasting. Be sure you use an unscented moisturizer so that the fragrances do not clash.

If you use a scented deodorant, body wash, or after shave be sure it goes with your cologne. Contrasting scents might not smell so good when mixed together.

Change your cologne with the seasons. Stronger scents work better in the winter months. The sweat and heat of the summer intensify fragrances so a lighter cologne should be worn.

Cologne can be used for daily wear or just special occasions. If you are wearing it to work during the day, be sure you do not overdo it. Be conscience of co-workers if they are sensitive to smells. You would not want to cause them a headache or sickness from your intense cologne.

When purchasing cologne, be sure to search online for discounts. Some of the most popular men's colognes can be found online at much cheaper prices then in the department stores or specialty shops.

If you are unsure of a scent or if you applied too much cologne, get a women's honest opinion. Asking a friend or family member what they think will guide you to proper wear.
