Mens Suits - Dress For Success

Youve got a fantastic proposal that you want to put forward at work

. You need to be taken seriously, make an impression for all the right reasons and ultimately have your proposal taken on board by the people you work with and for. In order to help this process along, it pays to dress the part.

Choosing colour and cloth

Suits made from wool are your best bet as they naturally allow your body to breathe helping you to keep warm or cool. In terms of colours, avoid plain black suits, and instead opt for a light grey suit charcoal, navy or a suit that is in one of those shades, but is pinstriped. If you want to wear a black suit it will have to be a black pinstriped suit.

Getting the right fit

Wearing a suit that fits you well and is of a stylishly appropriate shade for the work environment is how you will stand out. A suit that compliments and enhances the natural features of your body will make you stand out more than bright colours ever will.

In terms of cut, youll want to go with a single breasted suit jacket with one or two buttons as that gives a pleasant youthful appearance. The lapels should be notched and wide for the larger gentleman, narrow for the slender gentleman. At the back one vent is normal for many, though the larger gentleman should have a double vent back and may consider a double breasted jacket.

If you have broad shoulders the shoulder pads should be of a minimal size. And should your shoulders slope then the shoulder pads should build up your shoulders without extending them beyond the sides of your arms and should be in line with your actual shoulders.

The jacket should not be baggy on you, neither should it strain on you when buttoned up. The vents should not be strained open when you stand, and instead be flat against your rear.

Perhaps you dont know what size neck, chest or inside leg you have? The easiest way to find out is to go into a department store that sells mens suits, get them to take your measurements in the mens changing rooms and make a note of what they are.

Choosing the right shirt

The easiest shirt to go with would be a white one. However, in order to do your suit and overall outfit justice, you should wear a formal shirt that requires cufflinks to close the cuffs. A simple buttoned down shirt will not do. And white shirts are not your only option. Light blues are good, and you dont have to avoid patters. Check, gingham and stripes all look good when in blues, greens, reds, pinks or beige.

Tie and pocket square

The tie does not have to be completely tame in terms of colour, however if the pattern or colours involved, when looked at for more than a few seconds may make observers feel ill then its best not to go with that particular tie. The overall colour of the tie needs to stand out from your shirt rather than blend in with it.

A really sophisticated touch for this outfit will be to include a pocket square (handkerchief) in the front pocket of your jacket. In order for this to not look out of place, the colours present in the handkerchief should draw on those present in the tie that you choose.

Choosing the right shoes

A clean pair of black leather shoes is what you need. Of course it is a little more complicated than that. The shoes you wear should not make your feet look to big or too small in proportion to the width of trousers that youll be wearing as part of your suit. If you will have a really slender suit on, thats got a close cut, then you should wear something that has a more narrow and elongated toe such as Chelsea boots, Chukka boots or Messina shoes. Those with a roomier suit on would be served best by a pair of Brogues or Oxfords.

Some final touches

The socks that you wear should be the same colour as your suit in order to make them less noticeable when theyre exposed. Also, the belt that you wear should be a black leather belt that is similar in shade to your shoes. Finally, dont forget to pick up some cufflinks for your shirt, though avoid ones with cartoon details.
