Less is More

In case you havent noticed, there is a recession on and even the very wealthiest are finding it best to play down consumption. Bling is so very last year, subtlety is de rigueur. Even if it costs more than the au pairs salary, the latest trend in watches is for the understated look that would not look out of place at a church service but will still draw admiring glances at Ascot or Monaco Grand Prix.

This trend for men's watches is a little like a trend for jumpers being made from wool it means there is still lots and lots and lots of styles to choose from even if they are encased in stainless steel. Somehow the 70s are back in fashion. Not the strikes, macho attitude or choice of 3 TV channels, thankfully but 70s styling is making a comeback and Basel 2012 was full of retro styled men's watches. In the 1970s we used to buy our digital watches from the petrol station but today there are no petrol stations (perhaps theyll make a comeback) so purveyors of the finest mens watches now stock some funky, cool and downright retro digital watches from some of the best known mens watch brands. But retro also encompasses some great analogue designs too so again the choice is wide and you are still able to stay on trend.

Another men's watch trend for the year is for black watches The unflagging trend for stealthy carbon black as Mens Health Magazine so eloquently puts it. In fact, this monochrome trend might be an offshoot of the less is more trend featured above. But dont be fooled you may be majoring with one colour but there is again a wide selection of watches to choose from: from chunky G Shocks to dress watches, classical understatement to practical time pieces. And our bet is that any black watch purchased in 2012 will remain sought after for many years to come.
