Mentoring is a great form of interrelations between alumni and current students which gives to both sides various benefits in different spheres. Latest researches highlighted that as a result of such programs the improvement in students and pupils grades and attendance, decrease of youth alcoholism and drug usage are observed. Main aspects of mentoring relationships are closeness, emotional and instrumental support. A mentor has a great potential to change his/her mentees life and to establish close and supportive relations.

Mentoring programs have different focuses according to mentees needs.

School-based Mentoring Programs

School-based mentoring programs are more directed to working over academics or doing homework because these mentees are more often chosen on the base of their educational achievements. School-based mentors often see mentees teachers and have more influence on their mentees grades. A mentor and a mentee meet only at an educational establishment for one or two hours per week; a match focuses more on the academic success. Mentors and mentees meetings are supervised. This type of meetings has some benefits: it preserves mentors from excessive expenses, offers a comfortable and safe place for meetings, saves mentors time, helps mentee to be more concentrated on study, and etc.

Community-based Mentoring Programs

In community-based mentoring programs a matchs relationships are directed at influencing mentees social behavior, and, if a mentee is already a senior student, these relations may prepare him/her for a future career. A match is engaged in various social activities. Schedule of meetings and their places they choose together. Meetings of a mentor and a mentee usually last for two or three hours per week. They jointly choose the types of activities which they like the most. Matching is usually same-gender because in this way it is easier to find common interests and to understand each other. Mutual activities engage not only voluntary work, but also career questions, and pleasant community activities.
