. Given the chance, you will find it very gratifying to pass on what you have learned from your own experiences and the lessons learned there from. Being asked to help is a great thing, gives one the feeling of importance.
Most of the time, people don't feel any need for much contemplation before agreeing. However, being a mentor is no small matter, it will require some of your time and you have to attempt to make an impact. The moment you agreed, you should realize that the future of your apprentice lies partly in your hands, and on that note you should be guided accordingly. Agree on an arrangement. From the beginning, have a talk with your student about what you hope to accomplish and how best to bring it into fruition. Define the limits and restrictions of topics, subjects to be taken, what the rules and procedures are including manners and behaviors, and how to go about it. Agree on the manner of communication - when and how? Phone or e-mail? What other methods, if any? Would you be available before, during or after business hours? The mentoring job should be for a definite time - six to 12 months or whatever might be agreed upon. Instill in their minds that mutual honesty will be the bedrock of your relationship. There is nothing trivial about mentoring; on the contrary it is a professional commitment that should be taken and discharged seriously.
Concentrate. Once you are faced with the job on hand, you should put your whole mind and body on the task ahead of you. When you are with your students, you owe them your whole attention.
Assign works to be accomplished at home. Give them things to work on and complete after sessions. Require them face and perform tasks that will test their intellect and challenge their abilities to complete in a specific time period.
Give basis of comparisons. One of the most effective ways of imparting knowledge to your apprentice is by citing examples from your experiences. Show them models, instruments and systems to use as guide when they are making their own.
Guide them to the correct way. Apprise them of taking full advantage of available reference materials like books and the web. In the process, they will be expending their energy and money productively.
Let them be known to the public. Enhance their career prospects by taking advantage of every opportunity to speak highly of them in the presence of associates and friends.
Develop your students. Remember to speak glowingly of your apprentice's talents and qualities at every opportunity, it might in some way prove beneficial to their career. Keep your apprentice's confidence. You apprentice may confide in you about his worries, or discuss current topics, or any subjects for that matter. When they do, they should feel confident that what was discussed are strictly between the two of you.
