Merging History, Thrill, And Culture
Salt Lake City is the capital city and the most populous in the state of Utah
. It was originally settled in the 19th century by pioneers of the Latter-day Saint, or Mormon, faith.
Because of the westward expansion and the building of the first continental railroad, the city became a major outlet for travelers and grew economically. The economy there is now strengthened mostly by tourism, seeing as the city and the surrounding areas are some of the greatest arenas for winter sports in the world.
Salt Lake City has a very established public transportation system. For a fun and inexpensive alternative to driving, try taking a bus around the city to whichever destination you prefer.
You could also hop on the TRAX light rail, which operates daily and runs all throughout Salt Lake. The city is also very easy to navigate through, so if public transportation is not for you rent a car or hail a cab.
During the spring and summer months, the weather is mild and the scenery is extremely beautiful. Try renting a bike to get from place to place.
This is another alternative to walking all over town, which can get exhausting. Bicycle is a way to take in all of Salt Lake City while being out of doors and exercising.
In downtown Salt Lake City, there are many historical and religious sites that visitors to the Wasatch Front should not miss. No matter what your faith or religious affiliation, the landmarks of the LDS Church are beautiful and interesting places to see and visit and are what the city of Salt Lake was founded on.
The most prominent of all the landmarks is the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. With its white exterior and majestic spires, it is a sight to behold.
Pioneers that first came to Salt Lake City with the President of the Church at that time, Brigham Young, put everything that they had into building this religious sanctuary, even their own belongings. Though not all visitors are able to enter into the temple, due to religious statutes, anyone can go to the Visitor's Center.
In this center, you are able to learn about the history of the temple, pioneers, and teachings of the LDS Church. You can even visit the Family History Center and do genealogy work or look up the information of deceased family members.
Another entertaining part of the Latter-day Saint community in downtown Salt Lake is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The choir performs at LDS Conferences, records musical albums, and does performances throughout the year with other famous musical artists.
Try taking a trip to the Tabernacle to find out about the choir's practice schedule, because they usually welcome visitors during their practice times. Even when just practicing, the music the choir provides is extremely beautiful and powerful.
The city is also home to modern talent and arts. If you are visiting during the summer time and are a lover of music, the Gallivan Twilight Concert Series is one venue you cannot.
Every summer, usually throughout the months of July and August, talented artists, both well-known and independent, come to the Gallivan Theater for a series of concerts designed to bring different music styles to the people of Salt Lake City. The concerts are free, and are an exciting place to learn about new musical groups or listen to some of your favorites.
The concerts are weekly, and get very crowded, depending on which musician is performing. Try to show up at least an hour early; that way, you can find a spot to listen, set up a blanket, and enjoy the atmosphere until the show begins.
Music lovers may also want to find tickets to a show at In the Venue when visiting Salt Lake City. Many of the bands that come there to perform are well-known, and tickets are usually pretty inexpensive.
A trip to Salt Lake City during the winter time would not be complete without visiting "The Greatest Snow on Earth." There are plenty of resorts and mountain parks designed just for skiing, snowboarding, and winter sports in general.
Some of the most popular winter arenas are Alta, Brighton, Park City, and Sundance. Salt Lake City is a destination with enough history, landmarks, and activities to keep any visitor entertained for the entirety of their visit!
