Merida: A Brave Princess With Indomitable Hair

The first thing that catches the attention of Merida

, the protagonist of "Brave" , the new film from Pixar, is her long red hair. It's so perfect animation and movement that has, it seems real or better than any truth.

"This character demanded a hair wild and free, difficult to pigeonhole. We had a wonderful animation department to do so. The hair, to some extent, has its own personality and is a reflection of Merida, their struggle for freedom and despair "describes Katherine Sarafian, producer of the film and who was a few weeks ago in Chicago along with the director, Mark Andrews .

And if other heroines of animated films, as Rapunzel in "Tangled" and "Mulan" , there were the typical princesses waiting to be rescued by a prince and "live happily ever after" in an idyllic fairy tale, much less what is the star of "Brave" story set in medieval Scotland. Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), the eldest daughter of King Fergus (Bill collony) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), is a brash teenager, skilled archer and determined not to continue with what is traditionally expected of her. And all the time is seconded by his younger brothers, the mischievous triplets Harris, Hubert and Hamish. Merida wants to forge their own destiny defying what is expected of it, so that clashes with her mother will not wait. Elinor is a queen and the brain behind the throne occupied by her husband.

"Brave" tells how Merida challenge what is expected of her in her role as princess and demonstrate that it can be as brave as men. His actions unleash chaos and more when you go to a psychic-witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help to "change" his mother. The result will be beastly proportions and tangles fun, but if they were tangled hair of the princess.

The scene in which the Queen Elinor, who is the victim of the spell that the transformation takes off his crown to play with Merida, is how to stop being an authority figure for his daughter and become a partner. Being a woman protagonist, one might think that "Brave" is a feminist film, very "girl power", but it's more about family ties, how each member contributes something to that great tapestry called family. The film's production notes that Merida is a teenage girl he still passes through my head the idea of marriage. It is still in the process of finding who you are, what you want to be and decide their fate. And it wants to do so itself.

More than feminist, 'Brave' is a family movie. Merida's mission is first in her family to heal relationships and then the princess is not expected to save someone. That makes it a strong heroine for every age. In itself, "Brave" refers to those expectations placed on every human being, whether by tradition or roles.
