There are many performance footwear brands on the market

This will help to give the arches of the feet the maximum support, and allow the muscles and ligaments to work at maximum efficiency, just as nature intended. Womens feet are different from mens, so it is important to choose a shoe which is constructed from a female specific last, one geared to the anatomy of the female foot rather than an average foot or unisex design. If it doesn't say its specifically designed for women, it isnt.

Cushioning

If you are competing then you will want to keep the cushioning down to a minimum as it reduces the efficiency of running, however for most walkers and hikers who take to the hills for pleasure, cushioning is vital especially for long hikes.

Weatherproofing

For the winter, the shoes need to be capable of dealing with showers and repel water, whilst still retaining breathability. Gore-Tex linings will keep the rain out, whilst not restricting the flow of steam and moisture out of the shoes, keeping the feet perfectly dry and comfortable.
