Fortunately for lovers of winter walking, Wilbert L. Gore developed an innovative material back in 1976, which is lightweight and gives total protection from wind and rain. Gore-Tex fabric contains pores which are too small for water molecules to pass through, whilst being large enough to allow water vapour to escape to keep the feet perfectly dry. Whilst initially developed for protective clothing it was not long before shoe manufacturers realised the benefits could be used to keep the feet well protected too.

Nowadays, Gore-Tex features in many outdoor performance brands but the material and construction can leave boots heavier, which can sap the strength over long winter hikes. Not so with Merrell Gore-Tex boots.The Moab Mid Boot includes a fine layer of Gore-Tex fabric interwoven into the open mesh upper to maximise the flow of water vapour out of the boots, keeping them lightweight and highly breathable. To maintain robustness, the range features protective suede and leather panels, with the Chameleon 3 Ventilator increasing the protection for more serious hikes in the winter, especially well suited for challenging terrain.

Well insulated and supremely comfortable Merrell Gore-Tex boots are perfect winter warmers, keeping the feet at the right temperature from the autumn through to spring. The uppers offer great protection from the elements and under the tread is aggressive to give great purchase over wet autumn leaves, grass and thick mud. Featuring 5mm lugs constructed from highly durable Vibram TC5 rubber, you need not worry about where you place your feet.

Inside the boots the shock absorption is first rate, thanks to the innovative Air Cushion midsole and torsion is reduced with Nylon 6.6 injection moulded arch shanks giving great support on difficult contours. Whilst not quite as robust and long lasting as full grain leather walking boots, they offer a good trade off between weight and longevity and you won"t have to worry about breaking them in to get them comfortable. The flexible uppers offer comfort and a great fit straight out of the box.
