Get 'thin quick' and 'fast weight loss' schemes are a dime a dozen

. We are forever tripping over these usually costly plans in magazines and on the internet that promise fast and easy weight loss. And guess what - they work too - temporarily.

The problem with these sorts of weight loss programs is that they are not long-term solutions to weight loss or more importantly to keeping it off. Restrictive and strict food/diet plans can encourage yo-yo dieting as they are so difficult to stick to for more than a few weeks (sometimes days). They can also cause health risks along with increasing your appetite causing uncontrollable food cravings which can cause overeating preventing you from reaching your weight loss goals.

You will never find the path to a strong, lean, slim healthy body in bottles of diet pills, extreme calorie restriction or the wrong type of exercise program. To achieve this goal you really do need to understand the difference between a diet and a lifestyle change of healthy eating and proper exercise.

Firstly dieting is usually centered on restriction of certain food groups or overall calories. The problem with them is that they work against the very thing you need to improve for long term weight loss - they slow your metabolism (your body's engine) your fat burning machinery. This is the last thing you want to slow down if weight loss is your goal as it makes fat loss an impossible task as it slows the rate your body burns fuel (calories).


The difference with healthy eating and a lifestyle change is the idea of making healthier choices at most of your meals so your metabolism is boosted and will burn off your unwanted body fat. Eating small meals every 2-3 hours means you speed up your metabolic rate so the maximum number of calories is being burnt every minute of the day and night, whether you are being active or resting.

These small meals should have a source of protein at each one which will both fill you up and further help boost your metabolic rate. It will also give you loads of energy so you can put some effort into your exercise program so you have several tools working with your body to help you achieve your goals.

Your exercise program should be mostly strength training exercise as this is the only type of exercise that will boost your metabolism permanently. The condition of your muscle tissue is what drives your metabolism so if you have allowed your muscles to become weak and flabby this could well be the reason you have become overweight.

So you can see the lifestyle change is much more aimed at getting you the results you really want for the long haul. Sure it takes longer but when have you achieved anything really worthwhile immediately? Anything worth having takes time and that is part of the special journey you will be embarking on so you get back the body you will be happy to live in for the rest of your life.
