Metamorphosis of Hiphop Music and Culture

Hip hop, the music genre, has not only grown from a city to the whole world, but has also grown as a music style on the whole with various subgenres to its creditable influence.

The musical culture of African Americans, hiphop was brought to New York City in 1970s. And today, it has transpired globally without any barring of race and colour. This musical culture reflects the lifestyle of Black community and has become their voice for expression. The coloured people's unrest due to discrimination was vented by the way of Hip hop. With the advent of Hip hop, the gangster inspired neighbourhoods and drug infested streets indulged into dance and artwork battle rather than inner-city gang's physical violence. This urban culture encompasses elements of rapping/MCing, graffiti, break dance, DJing and others like fashion, lifestyle, dance, genres and language.

The so-called entertainment progressed to small house parties where Clive Campbell, better known as DJ Kool Herc played and experimented with breakbeat, inspired from Jamaican toasting. The music style started as house parties spread in US around 1970s and permeated outside New York City in 1980s. The world hip-hop movement created today brings people of different beliefs, cultures, races, ethnicities and gender together and hip hop became a medium for young people to express themselves individually and collectively. It became an alternative to the violent gang culture of the Bronx and transformed crime, violence, social decay and economic crisis into something positive by giving a voice to the voiceless.

The future of hip hop is rapidly metamorphosizing into a commercial industry. There is no longer any hint of venting frustration and voicing the expressions of the helpless. It has changed into an international multi billion dollar industry as artists are now shunning major record labels and joining hands with major consumer brand companies. The choice for today's artists is not Def Jam or Sony Records but major brands like Blackberry, Coca-Cola and Ford.

The artists today not only want to remain an artist, but also want a footing in other major industries like fashion and restaurants and ad commercials. Every other way to promote an album and the artists himself is sought after by the majority. There are many hip hop stars who have launched their own clothing lines and perfumes. A major reason behind the waning interest may also be the emergence of online distribution and also media piracy to some extent.

But with the soul of hiphop being sold out to commercialism, there is a dire need to revive true hiphop where each one aspired to sign record label deals, get advance money, make lavish music video and watch their album sell millions of copies. A scene where hiphop is being sold to Corporate America for million dollars is not desirable. Though there are traces and glimpses of real hiphop in sponsored music, it still does not have the old charm of hear hip hop music and rap music and no more reflects the culture of its origin, or should we say that culture does not exist anymore?
