Mexican Academy Award Winners
The Premier event for people involved in the film industry anywhere in the world is the Academy Awards
. It signifies the promise of more great work to come, while also giving recognition to top notch work that great talent has already produced. Naturally, Americans have won more Academy awards then their foreign counterparts, but this may be largely due to the fact that the awards are an American creation. Mexico also has a deserved spot on the awards listing. Many talented actors as well as others, call Mexico their home.
The first Mexican-born actor to receive Academy Awards for the same category on two separate occasions was the esteemed Anthony Quinn. He won the first for Best Supporting Actor in Viva Zapata! in 1952 and the second for Lust for Life in 1956. As of 2011, those are the only actors born in Mexico to gain an Academy Award. Surely there are far more to come!
Yet, as stated above, many talented people have come out of Mexico - not just actors. Part of what makes a movie a movie is superior art direction and Mexico has its share of Academy Award winners in the category of Best Art Direction. Emile Kuri has won twice, once for her work on The Heiress in 1949, and the second for the infamous film 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
Ms. Best Art Direction, was won by Brigitte Broch, for her work on the blockbuster film Moulin Rouge! Additionally, Eugenio Cabellero and Pilar Revuelta were the fourth Mexicans to receive an Academy Award for their hands in Pan's Labyrinth. Another Academy Award winning Mexican was on the set of Pan's Labyrinth, but in the category of Best Cinematography this time.
In 1971 Mexico was highlighted at the Academy Awards for a groundbreaking documentary entitled Sentinels of Silence. The story of Pre-Columbian Mayan culture was told in the eighteen minute film, in a way that had never been filmed before - via overhead helicopter point of view. A film narrated with curiosity and wonder, it was made in the 1970's, before the use of computer generated imagery, and was a groundbreaking film. The film won awards in the categories of Best Documentary Short Subject and Best Live Action Short Film. The Mexican government still has showings at embassies around the world of the acclaimed film Sentinels of Silence, as it is such a magnificent work.
