Mexico Real Estate US Recognizes Turn Around in Drug Violence

For those who haven't been to Mexico, one of the most recurrent objections to buying Mexico real estate is the reports of drug violence. There are two important facts to realize about this objection. One is that the violence affects only isolated pockets of the country; the other is that President Felipe Calderon's war on drugs, which has sparked the largest increase in violence, appears to be leading to a turn around for the better.

This fact was recently recognized by the U.S. The Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Office of Law Enforcement and Narcotics, William R. Brownfield, said that results of Mexico's recent policy's and actions will be paying off in the near future.

He said that Mexico has "bottomed out" in this crisis caused by the combat of crime organizations, suggesting that from here on in, improvement is on the way, acknowledging that the strategies undertaken by the head of the Ministry of Public Security, Genaro Garcia Luna, and have an impact.

This is very good news for Mexico real estate. Although the beachfront areas where Americans and Canadians usually buy have remained free of the violence brought about by these conflicts, the media-driven reputation of violence in Mexico has held fairly strong in the minds of North Americans. Over the four and a half years of Calderon's presidency, drug-related deaths have increased significantly; this is especially true since 2009 when various operations targeted top drug lords, leaving power vacancies and internal struggles for control.

The resulting conflicts have been isolated to the areas along the U.S. border, and a couple of other small conflicts.

The better news, however, is that, as Brownfield pointed out, although the most immediate result appears to be increased violence, within about 2 years the positive results of this administration's policies should visible.

What does this mean for buyers now? Even though the areas where people buy are free from these conflicts, once the resulting benefits of the government's efforts become apparent, the main objection to buying in Mexico will loose much of its force; this means more Americans and Canadians will become interested in buying in a sunnier, warmer and less expensive place, where they can nevertheless enjoy modern conveniences. Increased interest means higher demand, which means a bigger market for resales and rentals.

This makes two points clear; as always, it's safe to buy and live in Mexico, and, for those thinking of investment, now is quite likely an excellent time to make a move.
