Mexico Shopping 101

When you think of vacations, you think of the beach

, mountains, margaritas and lots of quality time with family. And, of course, you definitely think of is SHOPPING! Getting souvenirs for friends back home, getting the local artifacts to decorate your home, shopping for local food items and ingredients for a dinner party are all things you look forward to. However, shopping is different in different places, and every location has its own specialties. Also, shopping decorum, etiquettes, tips and tricks vary from place to place and culture to culture.

Come to Puerto Penasco, Mexico for a laid back, beach vacation and also the great shopping. In fact, almost any destination in Mexico is great for a relaxing break or a shopping spree. But some tips and advice about shopping apply to all visitors shopping in Mexico.

Everyone loves to bargain. But in Mexico, keep two things in mind - Bargaining is great when the kiosks and the sellers are on the beach, away from the mainland. But if you are shopping in an actual store/shop in the city or town, please do not bargain. You should expect to pay the price you see.

One very interesting thing you will notice when you are walking along the beach or lying on the beach is that vendor will come and haggle with you to buy their goods. If you want to buy, great! If not, saying NO is perfectly fine. To drive home your point more emphatically, waggle your index finger - that's a sign you mean "no" when you say "no".

When one thinks of Mexico, one also thinks of the silver vendors on the street or on the beach. If you are planning to buy silver from them, make sure its of superior quality. See if "sterling" or .925 is written on it.

But if you are store person and need to go to a department store to get your stuff, try out the local brands like Salinas Y Rochas (similar to Macy's), Dorians, Coppel (like CVS, Walgreens) etc. You will also find stores like Walmart and Sams Club in select cities and towns.

Remember, shopping is a local phenomenon and hence will have a local flavor. Respect the local culture and you will not be cheated. Last but not least, enjoy your stay in the great country of Mexico.
