. 17 Miami defeated No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners. Miami coach Randy Shannon said the win was huge for his team. Reigning Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford watched the game from the sideline. Bradford injured his right shoulder in the season opener against BYU.
The Hurricanes (3-1) scored 21 straight points, and then had James run out the final four minutes against an Oklahoma defense that came into the game as the nation's best against the run. Hurricanes' linebacker Jordan Futch stated that the Sooners couldn't stop the run and it was Miami's time to shine. Oklahoma's loss ended any national title hopes. Sooners' backup quarterback Landry Jones threw for 188 yards and DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown combined to rush for 151 against the Hurricanes, but their valiant effort wasn't good enough to secure a victory. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops told the press the Hurricanes made big plays down the stretch. The coach acknowledged that his team couldn't come up with the plays to win the game. Miami did not start the game the way they wanted. Harris threw interceptions on Miami's first two drives; the first was thrown right to Dominique Franks. The Sooners turned that one into a 16-yard touchdown pass when Jones connected with Cameron Kenney. After Oklahoma's Jimmy Stevens made a 21-yard field goal, the Sooners went up 10-0 in the second quarter.
Oklahoma had to be disappointed that their 95-yard drive ended with a field goal. Jones gave a lot of credit to Miami's defense. He said, "They played great." The Hurricanes did not play well in the first half. They downed a punt inside the Sooners' one, only to allow Brown to rush 48 yards on the very next snap. The Hurricanes missed tackles and Harris didn't get warm until later in the game, but James kept the Hurricanes in the game. He ripped off his longest run since his freshman season in 2006, a 50-yarder midway through the second quarter. Two plays later, after lineman Matt Pipho recovered Harris' fumble, Harris hit Jimmy Graham for an 18-yard TD pass and helped Miami claw within 10-7 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Hurricanes took the lead when Dedrick Epps caught an 11-yard pass from Harris that put Miami up 14-10. The Sooners fell apart in the third quarter. They took two 15-yard penalties, which led to a fourth-and-42 scenario. The Hurricanes got the ball back and Harris hit Benjamin for a 38-yard strike and Miami took a 21-10 lead. Jones and Murray tried to bring Oklahoma back into the game. Late in the third quarter, Murray scored from the two-yard line and got the Sooners within 21-17. But Miami's defense held Oklahoma to only a field goal on another drive in the fourth quarter. The Sooners never got the ball again, and the Hurricanes' defense secured a huge win for a team that some pundits did not think could win three games in 2009.
