Micro-dermabrasion and chemical peels can only be used every few months

The dermis is the second of three layers of our skin. Its job is to continually make new skin cells. Over a period of thirty days, these skin cells move up and become the outer layer of the skin where they die off.

For teens and people with oily skin, sloughing off these dead, dry skin cells unclogs pores and prevents acne break-out.

For men, daily exfoliation before shaving exposes hair follicles, allowing for a better, closer shave.

For women, regardless of what skin type, exfoliation reduces wrinkles and reveals youthful looking skin.

The trick is finding an exfoliator that doesn't do more harm than good.

Micro-dermabrasion and chemical peels can only be used every few months, not the least reason being their high price tag. Some cost hundreds of dollars, making them not an option for everyone.

Chemical peels, such as glycolic acid or fruit enzymes are designed to burn off the top layers of the skin. It doesn't hurt but it looks awful. As the name suggests, the skin peels and turn bright pink or 'frosts' grey. It's a great look for a Halloween costume but not so much for that important meeting. And weren't we doing this to look better, not worse?

Since the dermis makes skin continually it makes sense to exfoliate regularly. So, scrubs are the best solution? Sadly, no. Scrubs are made from ingredients, ranging from ground up apricot kernels and almond shells to sugar and salt. Recently I even heard of a scrub made from dried, ground sea sponges. One thing all these scrubs have in common is that they are tiny, sharp crystals that as they slough off the dead, dry skin cells also scratch the dermis underneath. While the dermis heals, the skin will look tired and overworked and maybe even break out.

Then there are scrubs that are made from plastic beads that will not scratch. These, however are not biodegradable. Called, 'mermaid's tears', they are washed into rivers and the oceans where they kill any animal that ingests enough to block its digestive tract.
