Microdermabrasion: Over The Counter Products

If you look in the mirror and just don't see a fresh

, clean glow to your skin, you may want to consider microdermabrasion. This non-surgical procedure is something that can be done in a salon, spa or physician's office. However, if you are looking for a more immediate fix, you can head to the store and purchase products over the counter to use in the comfort of your own home.

Variety of Products

Just like any other health and beauty item, there are several different brands to choose from when it comes to microdermabrasion. Don't just rush to the counter and choose the first one you see. Spend some time reading the labels to see what the contents are and how the package should be used. If this is the first time that you are trying something like this on your face, you may want to look for something for sensitive skin. This may be a little less harsh and give you some idea of what it is going to feel like.

Most people don't describe microdermabrasion as a painful process. It does however, feel like the outer layer of your skin is being removed through a scrubbing process. This is one of the reasons that it is important to read all of the directions on the package before getting started.

Using a Product at Home

While each microdermabrasion kit is different, most have the same set of directions. You want to have clean skin to start with. Remove all makeup from your eyes and face. Even though you are going to avoid the eye area as you work, it is still a good idea to make sure that your entire face is clean.

Begin by wetting your face with water. It may not be enough to just take a washcloth and go over the area. You want to make sure that you have splashed water on your face so that some is dripping down as you stand over the sink. Place a little bit of the microdermabrasion solution into your hand and work it into your fingertips. (Some products come with some type of sponge or other tool to use with the kit. If this is the case, use that instead of your fingers.) Use gently, circular motions to spread the product all over your face. Be sure to avoid your eyes and mouth area. There are other products that can be used to remove dead skin from the lips.

Remember to let the cleanser do the work. You don't need to scrub hard or press it into your face. You can be gently and just allow the microcrytals to remove the top layer of skin. When you have covered your entire face, can rinse. While it is possible to use a washcloth to get the product off your face, most people use their hands to scoop up water and splash it onto their face. Sometimes a washcloth doesn't get it all off and a light layer of the cleaners can be left on your face making it dried out and uncomfortable.
