down or what is more formally known as the microdermabrasion procedure. Basically, this is a skin resurfacing treatment which gently removes the top layer of the skin with micro-aluminum oxide crystals or a diamond- tipped wand.
Microdermabrasion is a procedure to remove the dull and dead skin to promote the growth of glowing skin. It removes the smaller acne scars, covers the enlarged pores and gives better skin color. It is a non surgical, non invasive treatment that can be done in spas, salons and clinics or homes.

Though experts argue that the laser or the chemical peel treatments have some advantages over this procedure, in both these treatments, patients are advised to take time off work, which is seen as a disadvantage by many. Microdermabrasion offers benefits similar to the more aggressive facial peels, with no downtime.
Some pundits would argue that a combo treatment of laser or chemical peels with microdermabrasion delivers better results. Once the top layer is removed, it is easier for other medications to get through. Patients trying to improve their skin color would find that after
the microdermabrasion procedure, bleaching agents are more effective.
The combo treatment has also been found effective in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. In this case, cosmetologists advise the use of glycolic acid or retinoic acid which aids in the collagen action of skin tightening. However, experts say that this is only temporary and must be repeated.
The treatment sometimes causes a certain degree of redness and tightening of the skin, which is likely to last a day. In some cases the skin tends to peel. It is best to take expert advice on the use of sunscreen or lotions, before getting back to work or play.
A cautionary note to patients who are on Accutane (a drug used in the treatment of acne) is to wait, anything between six to 12 months before undergoing microdermabrasion. If you are prone to herpes simplex near the lips, it is advisable to consult a doctor about the medication before the treatment.
