Microsoft To Help Bahrain Tra In Enhancing Information Security Awareness
Technological advances over the last few years have also facilitated the perpetrators of crime to devise new ways to defraud people
. Growing instances of cybercrime have raised concerns related to security, information privacy and financial implications among individuals, government bodies and business organizations.
Information security professionals face constant challenges in ensuring security, integrity and confidentiality of data. Lack of awareness and negligence are some of the prime causes for successful data breaches, malware injections and unauthorized access of computer systems to offenders. Offenders may use the stolen data over a period of time for opening false accounts, misrepresentation and conducting unauthorized transactions. Compromise of sensitive information may have long-term implications for victims. Often, users are not aware of the data breach and come to realize the same only when they are denied credit by a financial institution or when they receive letters for non-payment of dues. Therefore, it is crucial to guide and create awareness on safe online practices among all Internet users. Recently, Microsoft and Bahrains Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance information security awareness among all stakeholders such as educational institutions, parents, students and social groups. Under the agreement, Microsoft will share its expertise on promoting safe Internet usage.
Awareness on prevalent threats among Internet users will help control the perils of crime and ensure safe Internet experience. The TRA is undertaking a nationwide program to educate Internet users on safe online practices through video tutorials. The agreement will help the TRA in providing users across Bahrain with guidelines, safe online tips, best practices, and video tutorials in both English and Arabic languages.
Safe Internet environment is crucial for the continued growth of Internet and e-commerce, and success of e-governance in Bahrain. Organizations may reduce financial implications caused by cybercrime by organizing seminars on safe online practices, and conducting security evaluation of IT infrastructure through ethical hacking and vulnerability assessments. Regular monitoring of user activity and timely feedback on security lapses will go a long way in creating secured IT environment. Government and business associations must also create a mechanism to enable users to report security breaches and grievance redressal.
