Microsoft To Release Security Patches

It was initially thought that the problem might be significant enough for to warrant

the release of a rare 'out-of-cycle' patch, but the software giant will instead issue the patch as part of the a regular update bundle.

Exploit code for the vulnerability is circulating on the web and anyone using IE6 or IE7 is advised to turn off JavaScript until the patch is issued. Security firm Symantec advised Internet users to disable JavaScript in IE and to ensure their anti-virus definitions were up to date. "The exploit currently exhibits signs of poor reliability, but we expect that a fully-functional reliable exploit will be available in the near future. When this happens, attackers will have the ability to insert the exploit into sites, infecting potential visitors," Symantec said in a statement.

Microsoft are keen to let Internet Explorer users know that the issue was being addressed. "We want to make customers aware that we will be addressing the vulnerability discussed in Security Advisory 977981 in the IE bulletin on Tuesday," Microsoft's Jerry Bryant said. "We know that customers are concerned about this issue and we are also aware that Proof of Concept (PoC) code is available publicly," he added. Tuesday will also see the release of several other critical fixes which address flaws in Windows and Office. The Office update covers flaws in Project, Word and Works 8.5.

To disable JavaScript in IE7 users need to go to Tools, then Internet Options, click on the Security tab and click on Custom Level. Scroll down until the entry for Scripting is found, then click on Disable. In IE6, the instructions are the same though one is looking for the entry for 'Active scripting' in the Custom Level dialogue box. The browser then needs to be restarted in order for the fix to take effect. Symantec has warned that other versions of Internet Explorer could also be affected. Other browsers such as Firefox and Google Chrome are unaffected by the exploit.
