Microsoft officially let the cat out of the bag Wednesday:Internet Explorer 9is coming on Monday, March 14 at the SXSW event in Austin, Texas.

In a post on the Exploring IE blog, the company's senior director for IE, Ryan Gavin, wrote: "Exactly twelve months from the first Platform Preview of IE9, on Monday March 14th we will celebrate the developers and designers who are making a more beautiful web for all of us. We will release the final version ofInternet Explorer 9 for download beginning at 9 p.m. Pacific."

IE9 will be launched amid live music performed by Yeasayer, the Head and the Heart, and Fences at Austin City Limits Live.

The new browser represents Microsoft's bid to staunch the hemorrhaging of its browser market share to competitors likeGoogle's Chrome, which has taken the Web-using world by storm with its remarkable speed, simplified user interface, and more support for emerging Web standards like HTML5. Internet Explorer 9, which reached theRelease Candidate stage last month, looks to equal Chrome in speed, while adding a few tricks of its own, such as graphics hardware acceleration and a Tracking Protection feature. It also comes a long way in terms of HTML5 support.

The company has set up sites to show the new browser's capabilities, particularly its graphics hardware acceleration. TheIETestDrive site hosted eight "platform preview" versions of the browser, which allowed developers to test their code against the underlying engines powering the future IE9. The IE9 team claims that no previous Microsoft product has benefitted from as much beta-tester feedback as this browser has, with over 36 million downloads of pre-release software.

Another site, calledBeautyOfTheWeb appeared when Microsoft released the beta version of IE9, the first version to show off its new pared-down interface. The final code should be available for download next week on either site.

The blog post also noted that IE lead Dean Hachamovitch will deliver the Day 1 keynote address at Microsoft's MIX 11 Web developer conference on April 12.
