Mighty Gadget Ditches Contracts For Giffgaff
Years ago pay as you go deals were dreadful, truly terrible in comparison to a contract
and were only of real use to people who barely spent any money on their phone or couldnt pass the credit checks for a contract. However over recent years the gap between contracts and PAYG has been closing and in some cases such as GiffGaff you could argue contracts have been far surpassed in terms of value.
Back in the day you would have to pay full price for texts and calls on PAYG while on a 12 month contract you would get a free phone and inclusive texts/minutes that would work out less than the PAYG cost of them. Unfortunately as phones have become more advanced contract lengths have extended to 18 and now 24 months. At the same time PAYG deals have become increasingly good with GiffGaff and Three leading the way offering contract-esque like deals.
Both Three and GiffGaff offer options where you can top up a set fee per month giving you a set number of minutes a large or unlimited number of texts and unlimited data. Both of these are far cheaper than contract prices however there is the large caveat of no subsidised phone.
However even without a subsided phone these are still great deals, after reviewing Giff Gaff Mighty Gadget decided to transfer all our phones to them as the total cost of a SIM free phone plus GiffGaff for 12,18, or 24 months worked out cheaper for us than the contract equivalent. This is especially true if you dont phone a lot but text and use the internet.
For example at the moment you can buy a 10 goody bag which will give you 250 UK minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited internet, and free texts and calls to other GiffGaff users, if you were to buy an iPhone 4S for 499 and keep it for 24 months the total cost would be 739. If you were to go with the next cheapest, Tesco, who are another virtual mobile operator running on O2, the total cost would be 835. If you were to go with O2 the cost would be 898, T-Mobile 905, Vodafone 913, and Orange 914.
GiffGaff have also now started to offer data only plans for tablet users at a cost of 5, 7.50, and 12.50 for 500MB, 1GB and 3GB respectively.
