Migrate virtual machines running on Microsoft Virtual Server in Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V
Prepare a virtual machine in Virtual Server
1. In Virtual Server, start the virtual machine that you want to move.
2. Write down the network settings for each network adapter, if they will remain identical after the transfer of the virtual machine.
3. On a virtual machine, open the Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
4. Click Virtual Machine Additions, and then Remove.
5. Click Yes in the confirmation dialog box that appears.
6. After the successful removal of Virtual Machine Additions, reboot the virtual machine.
7. Turn off the virtual machine.
8. If this option is turned on Undo Disks, click Merge Undo Disks or Discard Undo Disks.
9. For Virtual Server Administration, select the name of the virtual machine that will move, then click Edit Configuration.
10. Click the General properties.
11. Copy the .Vhd file location that contains in the operating system of virtual machine.
Note: If you have several .Vhd files, suspended on a virtual machine, also mark their path.
12. Copy the .Vhd file from the location that you noted in step 11 to the Hyper-V server.
Installing a virtual machine on Hyper-V server
To do this, follow these steps:
1. On the Hyper-V server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Hyper-V Manager.
2. In control panel, click New, and then click Virtual Machine.
3. In the wizard, New Virtual Machine Wizard, click Next.
4. Enter a name for the virtual machine in a string Name, specify the location where you want to save the configuration files of virtual machines in the line of Location, and then click Next.
5. Enter the amount of memory that you want to use for virtual machines in the line of Memory, then click Next.
6. In the list of Connection, select the network connection that you want, then click Next.
7. Click the option Use an existing virtual hard disk.
8. Line Location, enter the path. Vhd file that you selected in step 12 in the "Prepare a virtual machine in Virtual Server", then click Next.
9. Configure the installation options that you want to use and click Next.
10. Check the installation summary and click Finish.
11. In the list of Virtual Machines, right-click on the newly created virtual machine and select Settings.
12. If the virtual machine has an additional hard drives, attach them to existing controllers to IDE, or add a SCSI controller, and then add the hard drives with this controller.
13. Add a network adapter for each network, which should connect the virtual machine, click OK to close the dialog box Settings for VirtualMachineName.
14. In the list of Virtual Machines, right-click the name of the virtual machine and click Connect.
15. In the Action menu, click Start.
16. Enter your username and password on the virtual machine.
17. When you see Found New Hardware Wizard, click Cancel.
18. In the menu Action, click Insert Integration Services Setup Disk.
19. Dialog box Setup for Integration Services should start automatically. If not, start Windows Explorer, then run Setup.exe from the CD-ROM. The following message appears:
Before Installing the Hyper-V Integration services, the HAL in this virtual machine must be upgraded.
20. Click OK, then restart the virtual machine when the installation is finished.
21. When you again enter your user name and password, the installation of Integration Services will be initiated. Restart the virtual machine after installation.
22. Enter your username and password on the virtual machine, then configure the network settings for each network adapter, the settings you saved in step 2 of "Preparing the virtual machine in Virtual Server".
Note: When you move a virtual machine Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Vista with Virtual Server to Hyper-V, the level of abstraction from hardware (HAL) is not automatically updated.
