Mijas, Andalucia Practical Info

Founded by the Tertessians during prehistoric times

, Mijas was originally named Tamisa by the Romans. Years later, the name of the village was changed to Mixa which was then over time adapted to its current name, Mijas. The area has a rich history, once being occupied by the Romans, Visigoths and the Moors. The area, under rule of the Moors resisted attacks from supporters of the Catholic Monarchs during the famous siege of Mlaga although the town finally surrender.

Climate

The climate of Mijas is a steady year round mild temperatures, averaging 18C throughout the year. Summers are not too hot and winters are mild with very little frost. Rain mainly falls between November and January and the area has over 300 days of sunshine each year.

Tourist Office


The Mijas tourist office is open to provide information to the many different nationalities that visit the area. The local government is very proactive in constantly trying to improve its services and you will find some of the staff can speak several languages. Maps of the village and details of walking routes along with many local newspapers in several languages are provided free. The tourist office also provides information on many different activities in the area and various day trips. A wonderful scaled model of the Mijas area is displayed in the office and there a few computers for visitors to use Internet.

Health Services

Mijas village has a centrally located health center and at least two dental clinics. All Spanish residents can use the facilities of the health center along with EU residents with a E111 form. Voluntary English interpreters are also available in the health center.

Local Farmers Market, Calle del Pilar.

The local market is usually a very busy place, selling local fruit and vegetables. There is also an excellent choice of fresh meat & fish available and most stalls sell a variety of products. Tasty fresh bread, local wine and fresh herbs and mixed spices can also be found in the market. Opening times are 8am to 2pm, Monday to Saturday.

Town Hall/Ayuntamiento

The Mijas town hall, is right in the center of the village and can not be missed. The building is impressive and a quick look on the inside will give you a glimpse of a beautiful working environment with a fountain in the center of the marble building. Normally used for residents to pay taxes and fines, the town hall also have a foreigners office, due to the large number of foreigners living in the area. The staff in the foreigners office speak Spanish, English, French, German, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian.

Donkey Taxi

Walking around Mijas you will the distinctive donkey taxis walking around the village. The donkeys have recently been provided with shade and are checked by veterinarians regularly. Tours start from 15 euros. Horse carriages are also available for village tours and can take up to four people. Horse tours are 20 euros.

Getting to Mijas

Public Transport: Bus services are improving in the area and buses now travel directly from Mijas to the surrounding towns of Alhaurin el Grande, Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmadena, Con, Malaga, Torremolinos and Fuengirola.


Driving: The A-387 brings you all the way to Mijas from the Coast or from Coin and Alhaurin el Grande. From the coast, both the A-7 and AP-7 connect to the A-387.

Airports: Malaga airport is very close to Mijas, only 25 mins drive. Gibraltar airport is 1 hour drive and Jerez airport is roughly 2 1/2 hours drive to the village.
