Mijas Races
Horseraces on the Costa del Sol are always busy since the Mijas Costa Hippodrome first opened to the public in 2000
. Located in the Urbanization named "El Chaparral", home of a wonderful golf course. There are wonderful views from the Hippodrome of the coastal area and the Mijas mountains, which form a lovely background.
Making use of the amazing climate here in southern Spain, the race season is longer than most countries, in fact races take place throughout most of the year. Evening races are held during the hottest time of the year or in the morning before the heat is too much.
The Mijas Hippodrome complex is one of the largest complexes on the Costa del Sol and has superb facilities. Located in the center of the race track is a field and track course and the race track has 2 tracks running around edge, both are sand. Additional facilities in the complex include a luxurious hotel and swimming pool. Dog owners coming to the races will be happy to know there is also a dog hotel available for visitors to look after their pets while the Mijas races take place.
Additionally, there is a children's play area to keep the kids happy and several places to eat with a wide variety of food to choose from. Mijas Hippodrome also has several bars, some of which open late and offer live music or DJ's for all ages to dance late into the night.
The Mijas racing programme is scheduled to have horse races every thirty minutes, allowing visitors enough opportunity to view out the horses and jockeys prior to choosing a winner and making a bet. Horses are taken from the viewing area to the Paddock area, to prepare for the race. The public are allowed access to both the viewing and paddock areas.
With excellent stabling facilities contained within Hippodrome, many local horse owners choose the complex as the best place to accommodate and look after their own horses and lessons are available for anyone who would like to learn how to ride a horse or improve their horse riding skills.
