Estrogen

Since women go through the menopausal process, estrogen can be a problem and doctors prescribe this kind of treatment. For men who are susceptible to osteoporosis, this can be considered an alternative treatment. Men can produce small amount of estrogen in their bodies and an imbalance of this hormone can put men at risk for osteoporosis.

Estrogen has antiresorptive qualities, making it ideal in preventing fracture through increasing the bones density. Progesterone hormone can also be paired with this estrogen treatment. However, it was found that this type of combination results to drastic adverse effects such as an increased risk for ovarian and breast cancer, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), blood clots and myocardial infraction (heart attacks). Few physicians try to prescribe this kind of treatment for these reasons.

SERMs (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators)

When one is interested in increasing bone density and decreasing risk for fracture, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM) can be an option. Any question regarding how this therapy works can be compared to the estrogen replacement therapy. However, this does not include any of the adverse effects of hormonal replacement. One example of this SERM is the drug called Raloxifene (Evista).

Calcitonin/Miacalcin

There are some patients who were advised to avoid the conventional estrogen and bisphosphonate drug therapies. The reason lies on the idea that it can worsen pains.

Another way of increasing the level of calcium in the body is through bone resorption due to parathyroid hormone activation. This is mostly used to treat osteoporosis in children.

Bisphosphonate Drugs

Individuals who are susceptible to osteoporosis are the ones usually prescribed with biphosphonate drugs. Biphosphonates are also helpful among people who are suffering from any bone-deteriorating disease such as osteopena. Some of the most commonly prescribed bisphosphonates are alendronate sodium (Fosamax), ibandronate (Boniva), risedronate (Actonel), and zoledronic acid (Reclast). The primary role of these drugs is to achieve bone strength and preventing fractures. However, recent reports regarding its disposition to cause drastic adverse effects in long- time users are causing alarms. Atypical, low-impact femur fracture and osteonecrosis of the temporomandibular bone are reported to be the effects of biphosphonates. Most of the sad news revolved around the biphosphonate drug called Fosamax. A Fosamax class action lawsuit can serve as proof of the dangers this drug.
