Milk May Fight The Spread Of Cancer
Milk is a substance that has a very bad reputation in cancer fields
. Many point to it as a possible culprit in breast cancer formation and other similar diseases. Researchers, however, are finding the exact same drink may actually prevent the spread of cancer once it's formed and help in preventing others.
The Problem With Milk
Milk is a rather nefarious topic in cancer circles. It's not because of the actual drink itself, however. The real problem with milk comes in because of the growth hormones used in the production of dairy cows in developed countries, especially the United States. Genetically engineered hormones like rBGH and substances like IGF-1 have been linked to cancer formation. Breast, colon and prostate cancer specifically may see an increased risk for formation if these chemicals are present in the body.
Researchers have found that these hormones are also high in content in other dairy products made from treated cows. This means cheese, ice cream and cream may also be a concern for some.
The Other Side Of The Coin
While growth hormones in milk might be linked with cancer, another substance found in the drink is strongly associated with cancer-fighting properties. Researchers at Cornell University point to conjugated lineoic acid or CLA as a possible preventive agent. This acid has been found to suppress carcinogens and even inhibit the growth of breast, colon and prostate cancers. It also seems to slow leukemia and ovarian cancer growth. Researchers suggest making minor dietary changes in cows' diets to increase the amount of CLA found in milk. A diet that is rich in unsaturated fat tends to enable cows to produce milk that has a higher CLA content.
Another study out of Australia found that milk can actually help prevent the spread of breast cancer. While this very substance is linked in some research to the formation of cancer, it is vital for stopping breast cancer from metastasizing into the bones. When bones are strong and are well fortified with vitamin D, they can actually block the spread of cancer.
Food And Cancer
The strong connection between cancer formation, prevention and food has long been studied and reported on. There is a large body of evidence that shows eating right can make a difference in cancer risks. To enjoy protections from cancer and other illnesses, it is helpful if people eat a well-rounded diet that includes:
- Fruits and vegetables: Getting at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables can lower cancer risks and better fuel the body for overall health. Broccoli, blueberries, strawberries, green leafy vegetables, carrots, tomatoes and others are all essential ingredients in a cancer-fighting diet.
- Whole grains: A high-fiber diet that is rich in whole grains like bran, wheat and oats can make a difference in cancer prevent. It is also essential for heart health because of its ability to battle bad cholesterol in the system.
- Low-fat dairy: While dairy does have some connection with cancer formation, it has also been shown to be vital for the body and even prevention. Low-fat choices that feed the bones are often the best to consider.
Milk has a mixed reputation when it comes to cancer fighting, but research is showing that its properties are still required by the body for proper growth and maintenance.
