Mind Mapping: How I Use It To Take Notes

Yesterday I took part in a live webinar presented by someone who had a new information product that interested me

. He began by saying he would be presenting five great new ways to build my reputation and business as an expert.

I immediately fired up my mindmapping software and created five branches, one for each method.

As he launched into the first method, I labeled the first branch on my map, and added new "child" branches for each point he made. I was easily able to keep up with him, because I didn't put in whole sentences. Rather, I put key words that would remind me of what he said. I repeated the process for each of his methods.

Then, as the one-hour presentation came to a close, he began to talk about the product. I hadn't decided whether I would buy it or not, so I used my mindmap to help me decide. How?

I added another branch labeled with the name of the product, and the url of the site where I could sign up. I added child branches for each benefit he talked about, not judging at this point but simply recording the information --- the judging would come later.

I had separate child branches for the price information, and for all the bonuses he offered.

Now granted, you need to be able to type fairly quickly to do this, but we're all having to do that anyway if we operate online. And you don't have to be 100% accurate --- a few typos won't get in the way of your review and analysis of the product afterwards.

When the webinar ended, I had a complete synopsis of the information in the form of a mindmap, instead of pages of notes in a notebook that I would never read again --- which is the way I used to do this before I found mindmapping.

I printed the map and took it away to read and consider carefully. This is important, because I didn't want to be tempted to hit that order button before I was sure it was for me, which can easily happen when you read persuasive sales letters at your computer.

The map made it easy to absorb the information and, while I did take away a couple of tips I could put into action, I realized that most of the material he covered didn't fit my business model and I didn't buy the product.

So that's just one more way I benefit from using my excellent mindmapping software. Every time I use it, I wonder how I managed before I bought it!
