Mind What You Tweet
This week, a story of a waiter being fired from a Beverly Hills restaurant for tweeting about the restaurant's celebrity clients spread online
. The waiter, who had been working at the restaurant for dive years, was fired after the restaurant he was working for received complaints from clients about the waiter's tweets. This is a reminder of how powerful Twitter and other social media can be. A seemingly harmless tweet you thought no one would pay attention to, could reach a person that may react positively or negatively to the tweet. That simple tweet could actually trigger a chain of events like what happened to the Beverly Hills waiter.
It is very important to remember that social media is powerful. People often used the line- "My blog, my rules" to defend the contents of their blogs. The thing is social media hold very strong potentials for reaching a wide audience. An online rant could spread through the internet. A short video could go viral. A short tweet could be read by the people involved.
This is why it is very important to use social media wisely especially for companies. For companies who do not mind their employees using social media individually, it is important to implement a social media policy that does not trample on their rights to use social media but helps you protect the interest of your business.
It is also important for a business to really be mindful of the kind of messages that they post online. The company must remember that anything they post online could have an effect on their business. So whether the company is simply posting an announcement or reacting to a blog, it must remember to always think of the message it is trying to convey and to carefully think of the words that it will use to convey the messages. With Twitter it is even more important to be careful about the tweets because of its140-character limit. Some important messages may lose its meaning because of the character limit. It is also possible for messages to be misinterpreted.
It is not very easy to create 140-character messages that really convey your marketing and PR messages to the public. If you can afford it, you should consider hiring a dedicated person to tweet on your behalf. Having a single person manage your Twitter account to serve as your official voice will really help you maximize the service. You just need to make sure that you and your VA are on the same page when it comes to the kind of messages you want to post out there. Make sure your goals and your social media plans are clear to the VA.
