Mini Golfing
Mini golfing is really golfing played on a more miniature level
. Instead of long fairways requiring several power shots to get to the next green, there tends to be a series of greens within easy reach of each other. This means that really the only club required is a putter as mini golfing is really a series of putts, one green after the other, with short distances in between. There's really no need for an
electric golf trolley either.
The first recorded case of a mini golf course is most likely the one at St Andrews in Scotland. This club claims a first for most things in golf. It does seem fitting, therefore, that mini golfing has its roots there. The Ladies' Putting Club of St. Andrews was founded in 1867. This came about because of the conservative Victorian thinking in those days which felt that it was unacceptable for women to be seen publicly swinging their bodies in a way that could be construed as provocative.
It was thought that sober and sensible men could be seriously put off their game by witnessing such overt sexuality, hence the need for a smaller, more sedate golf course where women were forced to strike the ball with a lot less gyratory movement. In this way, mini golfing was born.
That first miniature golf course at St Andrews was a standard 18-hole course. It was also probably the world's first golf course where the shout of "Fore!" was never heard, though it is tempting to wonder how many of the original women players wished they could. However, the idea caught on, and within a decade or so there were many hotels in the UK and the USA that started to offer mini golfing to their guests. The attraction of this lay in the fact that the entire course could take up the physical space of a tenth of a normal golf course, and it provided an added attraction for the guests.
Today the sport has taken off in its own right alongside "normal" golf. The World Minigolfsport Federation is an organisation that represents around 40,000 registered competition players. They come from a total of 37 countries, mostly in the USA and Europe. The rest of the world has yet to be as enthusiastic about the sport, but there are encouraging signs that this will eventually change.
Because of its relatively compact size, mini golfing is a sport that can be played indoors if there is a building large enough to house the 18-hole set up. This means that it can be played all year round, a great attraction for many. Playing in such places can be automated as the final 18th hole can be set up so that it captures the ball, preventing the player from going round again without paying for the privilege.
